Death toll rises in South Korean floods after unprecedented torrential rains

Weather of Arabia - The death toll has risen to at least 9 people, while 7 are considered missing, in South Korea, after unprecedented heavy rains caused floods that submerged main roads, subway stations and homes, and the floods damaged more than 700 homes and shops.

Three of the nine killed died after they were trapped in a basement apartment. Local press reports said the three victims were a woman and her female relative, as well as a teenager. Another person died while trying to remove a tree that fell on a sidewalk and was electrocuted.

More than 100 millimeters of rain per hour fell on the southern part of Seoul (the capital of South Korea) late Monday evening, with 141.5 millimeters of rain falling on other parts of the city, amounts not seen in 80 years, when 118.6 millimeters were recorded. On August 5, 1942, according to local media citing the Korea Meteorological Administration.

The accumulated amount of rain that fell on Seoul amounted to 420 millimeters as of 5 am on Tuesday (20:00 GMT on Monday), with more rain expected.
