Salalah is experiencing the “khareef” season at the height of summer.. So how is that?

Arabia Weather - When we say “the Gulf” and “summer” in the same sentence, many thoughts come to our minds such as the bright sun, scorching temperatures, desert, and humidity, but the matter is completely different when we arrive in the Sultanate of Oman, specifically in the Dhofar Governorate.

Dhofar Governorate in Oman; Specifically, Salalah is considered a distinguished tourist destination for visitors from all over the Gulf region during the “khareef” season, which is considered the peak of the tourist season in the summer.

In the “khareef” season, from June until mid-September, nature transforms magnificently as the land blossoms with green meadows, thanks to the southwest monsoon winds that blow during the summer. A seasonal phenomenon known locally as “autumn” occurs, as most mountainous areas are covered with fog and witness seasonal rainfall. This natural phenomenon helps in the growth of plants, the flow of valleys, and the formation of waterfalls, transforming the barren desert landscape into a charming green oasis.

Why does Salalah experience the “khareef” season in the summer?

There are many factors and reasons that make summer fall in Dhofar Governorate, which are:

• The deviation of the monsoon winds towards the Arabian Sea as a result of the topographic nature of the mountains of Somalia and Ethiopia
• The occurrence of the phenomenon of updraft of water causes a temperature difference between the warm monsoon winds and the cold water surface
• Wind collision with mountains causes the air to rise and water vapor to condense, forming low clouds
