Geologists have discovered that the “Lost Lake” in the Willamette Forest is disappearing as its water seeps through two ancient volcanic tunnels, turning its location into dry mud. The holes were formed 12,000 years ago by volcanic activity, and despite extensive study, where the water goes remains a mystery.

Subterranean Layers: The Biggest Mystery

Scientists believe that the water seeps into large underground layers through the surrounding sandstone, where it disappears until the return of melting snow in the winter, which flows from the surrounding mountains to refill the lake.
