Jordanians are awaiting an official statement from Prime Minister Dr. Jaafar Hassan to determine the date of the official holiday on the occasion of the Islamic New Year for the year 1448 AH, within the procedures adopted for religious and national occasions.
According to astronomical estimates and approved calendars, the first day of Muharram and the beginning of the new Hijri year is expected to fall on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, while the official date of the holiday remains pending final government announcement.
It is customary for the Prime Minister’s office to issue an official statement specifying the details of the holiday, including ministries, government departments and public institutions, in addition to stating any exceptions related to some vital sectors according to the nature of their work.
The Islamic New Year is one of the most prominent religious occasions in the Islamic world, as it marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar linked to the event of the Prophet’s migration, and it is classified as an official holiday in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
