The start date of the winter forty-day period this year

Arab Weather - The forty days of winter (or the forty days of winter) are known in Jordan, the Levant and many Arab countries as the beginning of the period in which the cold intensifies in the winter season. It is an important and critical period, especially for farmers and agricultural lands, due to the high chances of frost and freezing that cause damage to agricultural crops. So when does the forty days of winter begin in Jordan?

When does the forty-day period of winter (Al-Murabba'aniyah) begin in Jordan?

The forty-day period begins with the beginning of winter astronomically, that is, on December 21st, and ends at the end of January, meaning it lasts for 40 days.

Winter lasts for ninety days, divided into two parts:

The first section: Al-Murabba'aniyah, and its name refers to the number of its days, i.e., forty days.
The second section : The fifty days, and its length is indicated by its name, i.e., fifty days, and it is called the period of the happy ones.

Following the forty-day period in Jordan is the period of the four Sa'ud periods, which are:

Saad Al-Dhabih (begins on 1/31) : This is a metaphor for the intense cold that occurs during this period. It is expressed in the popular saying: (Saad slaughtered, the dog didn't bark, the farmer didn't plow, and the shepherd didn't graze).
Saad Bala’ (begins on 2/12): It is called Bala’ because the earth absorbs its water, causing rivers to overflow and wells to fill. This is expressed in the popular saying: (Saad Bala’, the drop falls and is swallowed).
Saad Al-Saud (begins on 2/25): The weather breaks its cold spell and tends towards warmth. This stage is like the beginning of spring, as leaves mature, flowers bloom, and the signs of spring's arrival begin. It is expressed in the popular saying: (Saad Al-Saud, the water flows in the branches, and everything cold warms up).
Saad Al-Khabaya (begins on 3/9): Trees blossom, insects roam, and spring awakens in the land. It is expressed in the popular saying: (Saad Al-Khabaya, snakes emerge, and young girls become more active).

What are borrowed days?

The borrowed days are 7 days, including the last 4 days of February and the first 3 days of March.

It was named February because February, the shortest month of the year, borrows from March to extend the rainy season. It is also called "the old woman's days" because it falls at the end of winter. During these days, the cold is at its peak, and the rains are heavy. February says to March, "March, my cousin, three days from you and four from me, so we can leave the old woman in the valley singing."

The days of Al-Hasum begin on 3/11, and it has been said that their duration is 6 or 8 days. They were named as such because they are days of intense cold and wind, which are mentioned in Surah Al-Haqqah, where God Almighty says: “He subjected it to them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people lying dead therein as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees. (7) Then do you see any of them remaining?” (8)

The second one is on 2/27, and it is the ember of water; people feel the warmth of the water.
The third is on 6/3, which is the ember of the earth; people feel the warmth of the earth.
