Arab Weather - With the onset of summer and rising temperatures across large parts of the European continent, the World Meteorological Organization has confirmed that extreme heat waves will become more frequent and intense in the coming years, a direct result of climate change resulting from human activity.
July is traditionally the hottest month... but it's too early!
WMO spokesperson Clare Nullis explained that July typically sees the highest temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere, but what's unique this year is the timing of the early heatwave, which is exceptional, even if not unprecedented.
Heat waves... the silent killer
Knowles described high temperatures as a "silent killer," since their impact on health is not always accurately reflected in statistics, unlike weather phenomena such as hurricanes and storms.
Lives can be saved!
"Every heat-related death is preventable," says Knowles, emphasizing that awareness and preventative measures are enough to avoid many heat-related deaths.
What is causing the heat wave in Europe?
The organization explained that the current heat wave in Europe is due to the dominance of a high-pressure system, which causes hot air to remain over the region for longer periods.
