The land of a thousand dams: Severe thunderstorms hit Türkiye... Will the risk of flooding the Euphrates River increase?

These developments come at a time when questions are growing about the potential impact of these rains on the Euphrates River basin and the major dams built along it.

The data indicates a significant increase in the flow of water in the Euphrates River during the recent period as a result of the abundant rainfall that fell on large parts of Turkey, which led to an increase in water imports to the dams and reservoirs located within the river basin.

Under these circumstances, authorities are closely monitoring water levels in Turkish and Syrian dams, especially given that many reservoirs are filling at higher rates than in previous years. Some dams may be forced to increase their water releases to maintain safe operating levels, which will lead to higher water levels in the Euphrates River flowing towards Syria and Iraq.
