تحدث نتيجة تفريغُ كهربائي بين قاعدة السحابة ذات الشحنات السالبة مع الشحنات الموجبة على سطح الأرض، وقد تُصيب هذه الصواعق  الكثير من الأجسام الثابتة والمُتحركة على سطح الأرض، من بينها البشر.
