Arab Weather - Areas in Yemen, specifically Mount Sabr in Taiz Governorate in the southwest of the country, were affected by a very strong hailstorm yesterday, Friday, which resulted in large accumulations of hail and the mountainous area being covered in white in an exceptional scene, especially since Yemen is among the areas that experience very hot weather during the summer season.
Weather experts at the Arab Weather Center explained that what happened was not snowfall, but rather a very heavy downpour of hailstones resulting from strong cumulonimbus clouds, which gave the impression that the region was covered in snow.
God Almighty says in His Holy Book:
Do you not see that Allah drives the clouds, then gathers them together, then piles them up, and then you see the rain emerge from within them? And He sends down from the sky, from mountains [of clouds] within it, hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightning almost snatches away the sight.
(Surah An-Nur: 43).
The scientific explanation for this phenomenon is that the region was affected by a strong thunderstorm accompanied by high-altitude cumulonimbus clouds, which are the clouds responsible for violent weather phenomena such as heavy rain, hail, lightning and thunder.
Cumulus clouds are characterized by their large vertical extension within the atmosphere, with their peaks rising to high levels where temperatures drop well below freezing, while their bases are low. Within these clouds, strong updrafts and downdrafts are prevalent.
Upward-moving air currents carry water droplets to the upper layers of the atmosphere, which are extremely cold with sub-zero temperatures. There, they freeze, forming tiny hailstones, which then fall back into the cloud before being carried upwards again by the rising currents. This cycle continues until the hailstones become large and heavy, and when the rising currents can no longer support them, they fall to the Earth's surface in large quantities.
The stronger the rising air currents and convection within the cloud, the larger the hailstones and the more intense the precipitation. This can lead to large accumulations on the ground, as happened in Jabal Sabr, making the scene appear as if the region had donned a white robe in the heart of summer.
And God knows best.
