Arab Weather - Dr. Abdullah Al-Misnad, Professor of Climate at Qassim University and former Vice President of the Saudi Weather and Climate Society, said that it is a mercy from God Almighty that the cold does not come suddenly overnight or within a few days, but rather it gradually increases over the course of about three months. This gradual change allows for a gentle transition from the intense heat of summer to the harsh cold of winter, and this is from God’s kindness to His servants.

Dr. Al-Musnad explained via his account on the “X” platform that if the cold came all at once, and the weather changed from temperatures in the forties to less than 10 degrees within hours, it would have a devastating impact on agriculture and wildlife. He drew attention to the verses of the Holy Quran that describe the earth and its functions, such as the Almighty’s saying: (Or who made the earth a resting place), (Who made the earth a bed for you), (Have We not made the earth a bed), (It is He who made the earth subservient to you).

The reason for the change in temperature between summer and winter

He pointed out that the change in temperature between summer and winter occurs due to the tilt of the Earth's axis by 23.5 degrees, which causes the sun's rays to deviate from being perpendicular in summer to oblique in winter. This tilt makes the shadows of objects longer and reduces the intensity of heat, as the sun's rays spread over a larger geographical area, which reduces their concentration.

He added: “Without this tilt, the Earth would have only one season, and people would have lived in specific geographical areas. God has precisely determined this tilt, which balances temperatures and allows humans, animals and plants to adapt to the changing seasons. If the tilt had been greater or less, the severity of the cold in winter and the heat in summer would have increased to an unbearable degree.”

Al-Misnad stressed that the Earth’s proximity or distance from the sun does not significantly affect the succession of seasons. In fact, the Earth is closest to the sun during the northern winter, reaching its closest point in the first ten days of January, 5 million kilometers away from its location in July. Despite this proximity, it is the tilt of the Earth’s axis that controls the succession of seasons.

He concluded by saying: “This small difference in the distance between the Earth and the Sun does not significantly affect temperatures. If it did, summer would be in January and winter in July. But the tilt of the Earth’s axis is the main factor that determines the seasons, and this change in temperature is beneficial to humans, animals, plants, and even inanimate objects.”
