Arab Weather - Experts at the Arab Weather Regional Center, after monitoring the latest computer modeling results regarding the deviation of water surface temperatures from averages, said that the surface temperature of the Atlantic Ocean, specifically near the coasts of the Americas and the Gulf of Mexico, is witnessing a clear rise above normal rates, as it has risen above its average by an amount ranging from one to two degrees.
This means that temperatures in these areas range between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius, with further increases likely in the coming period. Does this portend an even higher-than-usual hurricane season?
After conducting a climate study, Arab Weather Center experts explained that the rise in the surface temperature of the Atlantic Ocean injects large amounts of water vapor and latent heat energy into the atmosphere, which serves as fuel for tropical storms (hurricanes).
This could herald more intense and more active tropical cyclones in the Americas during the hurricane season, which begins meteorologically in early June and continues through late November, peaking between mid-August and August.
This does not mean that there is no possibility of tropical cyclone activity at other times of the year, but this period is considered the peak of activity in the Atlantic Ocean.
1. The first mechanism:
As bands of cumulonimbus clouds move from the African continent toward the warm ocean surface, the thunderclouds begin to feed on the latent heat energy and water vapor released from the ocean surface. The clouds then grow vertically and increase in size, and atmospheric pressure drops until winds begin to swirl at high speeds around the cumulus cloud's center, officially forming a tropical cyclone.
2. The second mechanism:
It occurs when the temperature of a body of water rises above 26 degrees Celsius. Water vapor then begins to rise into the upper atmosphere, where it cools and condenses. Cumulus clouds begin to grow and develop, becoming towering, fueled by the warmth of the water's surface and the emitted vapors.
As a result, the air density decreases and the atmospheric pressure drops to cyclonic levels. Winds then rotate regularly and at high speed around the low-pressure center, announcing the formation of a hurricane.
