Arab Weather - The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season to be more active than usual, amid strong climate indicators of an increase in the number and intensity of hurricanes this year. The season officially begins on June 1 and runs through November 30.

Hurricane season with above-normal activity

NOAA's forecast indicates a 60% chance that the 2025 season will be above average, compared to a 30% chance for a normal season and only a 10% chance for a below-average season. Between 13 and 19 named storms (with winds of 62 km/h or greater) are expected to form, with 6 to 10 of these potentially becoming hurricanes, including 3 to 5 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher, with winds exceeding 178 km/h).

NOAA experts attribute this forecast to several atmospheric and marine factors, most notably unusually warm temperatures in the tropical Atlantic, which are considered "fuel" for tropical storms. Weaker wind shear is also expected, allowing cumulus clouds to grow vertically. This is in addition to the continuation of neutral conditions for the El Niño and La Niña phenomena, and the expected increase in monsoon activity from West Africa, a region known for producing powerful Atlantic hurricanes.

Call for early preparation

Administration officials emphasized that these forecasts are a "call to prepare," especially given previous experiences with inland hurricane flooding, such as last year's Hurricanes Helene and Debbie. Experts stress the importance of taking proactive measures, such as preparing emergency plans and stockpiling essential supplies before a potential storm arrives.
