According to the US Geological Survey, this earthquake has been described as one of the most violent earthquakes recorded in global history.

The earthquake resulted in the destruction of all buildings in Kingston due to earthquakes and subsequent fires, which continued for three hours before inspection efforts began. It peaked in deaths of around 1,000 people, and caused material damage estimated at $30 million (equivalent to $833.25 million in 2020). A short time later, a tsunami was reported on the north coast of Jamaica, with the highest wave reaching a height of about 2 m (6–8 ft).
