Arab Weather - Dr. Ammar Al-Sakaji, head of the Jordanian Astronomical Society, said that the skies of Jordan and the world will witness a total lunar eclipse on the evening of Sunday, September 7, 2025. The eclipse begins at moonrise and lasts for approximately five hours and eight minutes in all phases, making it one of the longest eclipses in recent years.
Total lunar eclipse: A blood moon graces the skies of the Arab world on this date.
The eclipse peaks at 9:11 PM Jordan time, when the moon is at its deepest point within the Earth's shadow, taking on a stunning copper-red hue that lasts for 82 minutes. Residents of Jordan can clearly see most of the eclipse's phases, especially the total eclipse, which extends from 8:30 PM to 9:52 PM.
That night, the moon will rise above the horizon like a living celestial painting, fading from silver to copper-red, then returning to its former glory. The scene will be an opportunity for contemplation, as the sky is adorned with a mysterious color that begs wonder and amazement, as if we are witnessing a rare cosmic spectacle dedicated to each one of us.
This distinctive color is due to the passage of sunlight through the Earth's atmosphere, which scatters the colors, leaving the red wavelengths to reach the moon, making the scene similar to what we see at sunrise or sunset.
The partial eclipse begins at 7:27 p.m., with the Earth's shadow appearing over the edge of the moon. The full moon enters the umbra at 8:30 p.m., marking the beginning of the total eclipse. The spectacle reaches its peak at 9:11 p.m., when the moon is at its deepest point in the umbra. The moon then gradually begins to emerge from the umbra, with the total eclipse ending at 9:52 p.m., and the moon's exit from the umbra is complete at 10:56 p.m.
Perhaps the most beautiful moment of an eclipse is when the shadow completely engulfs the moon, making it appear like a jewel suspended among the stars. It hides behind the Earth's veil, but it doesn't disappear. Instead, it transforms into a red lamp illuminating the peaceful night. Looking at this scene reminds us of our fragility before the universe and the majesty of the sky, which never ceases to amaze us.
The star Suhail will be visible in the Jordanian sky with the naked eye after September 15th.
The eclipse will be visible across most continents, and approximately 60% of the Earth's population is expected to see it "in all its phases."
We invite astronomy enthusiasts and photography lovers in Jordan to seize this unique opportunity to document the eclipse scenes and its phases with their cameras or mobile phones, and enjoy the beauty of the sky that night from different regions of the Kingdom. We also invite everyone, from cities and villages, to the countryside and deserts, to follow this cosmic phenomenon with the naked eye from anywhere. It does not require observation tools or telescopes, but all we need to do is raise our eyes to the sky to live an unforgettable experience under the cloak of night adorned with the red moon.
It is important to emphasize that solar and lunar eclipses are not related to any terrestrial or human-related events. They are purely natural phenomena that occur as a result of the movement of celestial bodies in their orbits. They have no impact on Earth or on human lives, other than the magnificent cosmic spectacles they provide, inviting us to contemplate the beauty of the universe.
