Video: A plane flies below the eye of a category 1 hurricane, capturing stunning footage.

A video clip shows rare scenes from inside the eye of Hurricane Irene, captured by the US Air Force's reconnaissance squadron during flights conducted on Thursday and Friday to gather accurate data on its path.

Irene was classified as a Category 5 hurricane after recording one of the fastest rates of strengthening in Atlantic history, transforming in just over 24 hours from a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 120 km/h to a Category 5 hurricane with winds of nearly 260 km/h, before weakening again to a Category 3.
