Arab Weather - Lake Tiberias, the largest freshwater resource in the Palestinian territories, is witnessing an unprecedented drop in water levels this year due to the drought that has hit the entire region. This drop has environmental consequences as it affects water resources. The severe drought in the lake was followed by the emergence of a small island that had been submerged for years, raising questions about the nature of this event, its causes, and the extent of its recurrence in previous droughts.
As the water level in the Sea of Galilee continues to decline, a small island has begun to appear in its southern part, having been submerged for many years. This is a natural phenomenon that occurs during periods of severe drought, and has been recorded in previous years, such as 2018 and the early 2000s, when the lake experienced somewhat similar conditions.
The appearance of this island is due to the exposure of lands normally submerged by water, an indicator of the severe decline in the lake's level and the impact of drought on the environment and water. Although the phenomenon is visually striking and has even been observed via satellite imagery, it is natural and does not indicate a permanent change in the terrain. The island typically disappears when rains return and sufficient water flows.
Low rainfall and above-average temperatures in recent months are among the most significant factors contributing to the decline in the water level of Lake Tiberias. The dry climate reduces the amount of water reaching the lake through rain and rivers, while rising temperatures increase the rate of evaporation from the lake's surface. Long-term climate changes are increasingly affecting water resources, making dry periods more severe and frequent, and increasing pressure on available water resources in the region.
